How to Create a New Addon Domain

Please Note: Some of the control panel images may not coincide with your control panel exactly. But the basic concepts are the same no matter which control panel your account is currently setup to use.

1. Login into your control panel (http://yourdomain.com/cpanel) and click on “Addon Domains” or “Manage Addon Domains” from the home page of your control panel.
   
2. You should then see the follow fields or similiar fields along with an “Add Domain!” button:
   
   Here is an explanation of the fields:
   • New Domain Name: The new domain name that you are adding to your account
   • Username/directorysubdomain Name: This is the field that you use to tell the system which directory the new domain name should point to. This new directory will reside in the public_html directory in your account. So for instance, if you type in “newsite” in this field, the domain name will then resolve to the files in the directory “public_html/newsite/”
   • Password: This field is present because a new FTP account will be created with the addon domain that resolves just to this new website directory. This is handy if you are setting up a site under your hosting account for a friend for instance. Let’s say you set the password to be “password” (please don’t ever do that in real life though!). You’ve set the directory above to be “newsite” and now, once you click “Add Domain!”, there will be a new FTP account with the username “newsite@yourdomain.com” (note that your domain name, the new one you’re adding, will be appended to the end of the new FTP and account) and the password “password”.
3. Click “Add Domain!”

And that does it!

Please Note: It may take sometime for the new domain name to actually resolve to the directory you specified. It could take up to 24 hours, but more than likely it will resolve within a few hours.

Also Note: If you’re adding on a domain name that wasn’t ordered with OK Public, then you’ll need to change the DNS (domain name server) settings with the company that you registered the domain with. Here you’ll find the correct DNS entries that you’ll need to set.

1. Login to the control panel and click on the “MySQL Databases” link in the “Databases” section.
2. Use the form (shown below) to create a new database. Type in the name of the database that you’d like to create. Please note that the name that you input will be appended to the end of your username. For example, if you type in contacts, the database will end up being named yourusername_contacts.

   

3. Next you will need to create a user that has permissions to read and write to the database. Use the form (shown below) to create this user by typing in a username and password. Again, the username you input will be appended to the end of your control panel username. For example, if you type in “contacts” for the username, the username will end up being yourusername_contacts.

   

4. Once you have created both the database and the user, you now have to link the user to the database. In other words, you have to let the server know that the user has permission to read and write to the database that you created. Use the dropdown options in the “Add Users to Your Databases” section to assign the new user to the new database.

   

You have now created a database, a user and you have assigned the user to the database. You can now use that information to connect to the database using a web application or a script in your hosting account.

When setting this up, the host should be “localhost” unless you’re connecting to the database from outside of your hosting space with OK Public.

1. First you will need to login to the control panel if you haven’t already done so. Your username and password are included in the “Domain Activation” email that was sent when you first signed up with OKPublic. If you didn’t receive it, please contact us and we’ll get the info out to your right away.
2. Click on the “Manage Accounts”
   
3. Click on the “Add Account” link.
   
4. Type in your desired email address and password for the new account. Then, if you’d like, you can set the quota to limit how much mail the new account can hold. If you’re not sure about this, then just leave this field blank for no quota.
5. Click on the “Create” submit button. You will see a screen that reads “Account Created.” Click on the “Go Back” link. You will now see the new account listed!

There are two ways to read and send emails with the new account:

1. Use the webmail client. To do so, go to http://www.okpublic.com/webmail/ and enter in the full email address and password of the account. You will have the opportunity to use three different mail clients; Horde, NeoMail or SquirrelMail. Each works very well but whereas Horde has many advanced features, NeoMail and SquirrelMail are a bit lighter and perhaps easier to use.
2. Setup a Email Client. You can also setup an email client like Microsoft Outlook or Mozilla Thunderbird to access your email. While viewing the list of email addresses in the control panel, click on the “Configure Mail Client” link to view the account information that you’ll need in order to setup access via an email client.

1) Click on the ‘New site …’ option in the ‘Site’ dropdown menu.

2) In the new window, make sure that the “Advanced” tab toward the top of the window is selected. I find that the “Advanced” configuration is actually a bit easier than the “Basic” configuration. You’ll be in the “Local Info” section where we’ll need to set the following options:

Site Name: Whatever you’d like to refer to your site as. This is for your own identification.
Local Root Folder: Select the folder on your computer where you’d like to store or are currently storing your site’s files.
Default Images Folder: This is the folder on your computer that contains the images that you are or will be using for your site. If you are going to select a folder, the folder needs to be within the Local Root Folder. But you don’t need to select a Default Images Folder if you don’t want to.

The other fields (HTTP Address and Enable Cache) aren’t necessary.

3) Now select the “Remote Info” category to the left of the window. We’ll need to set some more options:

Access: Select “FTP” from the dropdown list.
FTP Host: ftp.mydomain.com (If you’re domain name hasn’t resolved yet, you can use ftp.okpublic.com here instead).
Host Directory: public_html/
Login: (This is the username that you selected when you signed up for an OKPublic account. It should also be contained in the “Domain Account Activation” email that should have received when your account was setup.)
Password: (This password is contained in the FTP section of the “Domain Account Activation” email that should have received when your account was setup. If you didn’t receive it or you are unsure about what to use here, please contact us and we’ll be happy to help).

You can check the “Automatically upload files to server on save” option if you’d like to upload the file you’re working on each time you save. I personally don’t like to do this as I save a lot while I’m working on a page and I don’t want to put the file on the server each time I save. It’s up to you though.

That’s it! Click on the “Test” button to make sure all of the settings are correct. If you get an error, run through the above steps again and don’t hesitate to contact us if you’re still having problems.

What is FTP? Here is a quick definition from Wikipedia:

“FTP or File Transfer Protocol is used to connect two computers over the Internet so that the user of one computer can transfer files and perform file commands on the other computer.”

So in order to use FTP, you first need to obtain an FTP client or software program. We recommend Filezilla as it’s:

• Open Source (Free!)
• Easy to use
• Updated often

You can download Filezilla here: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=21558
(For our purposes, it’s best to get the non-Beta version of the program or stable version.)

Once you download and install the program (the default options that Filezilla specifies during installation will work fine), start it up and you’ll see an interface that looks similar to the one below. Click on the computer icon as shown below:

The below screen will come up. Click on the “New Site” button as shown by the arrow below (click on the image to view the full-size version):

Now you need to enter in the details for the new FTP site that were contained in the email you should have received that contained the subject line: “Domain Account Activation”. You need to substitute mydomain.com, myusername, and mypassword with your own information contained in that email.
You can view the image below to determine where that information needs to be placed in Filezilla:

• Host: ftp.mydomain.com (If the domain name that you are using is for example a .net extension, then it would be ftp.mydomain.net).
• Servertype: FTP
• Logontype: normal
• User: myusername
• Password: mypassword
  

When you’ve finishing filling in that information, click on the advanced tab as shown above.

The settings in the Advanced window should be:

• Default local directory: This should be the path to where you store or would like to store the files that you want to put up with your website. Click on the
• Default remote directory: public_html/ (This is your directory on the server that is accessible by the web)

Once you’re done with that, click on the “Save and Exit” button back at the main screen.

That should do it! Now you can connect to your site and upload files from your computer to it.

1. Login to the control panel by going to http://www.okpublic.com/cpanel/ and entering in your username and password.
2. Click on the Fantastico” link at the bottom of the page.
   
3. Click on the “WordPress” link in the list of software.
   
4. Click on the “New Installation” link.
   
5. Fill out the form. Below the image are explanations of each field.
   
   • Install on domain: Choose which domain to use with WordPress. This only applies if you have multiple domains linked to the same hosting account.
   • Install in directory: Leave empty to install in the root directory of the domain (access example: http://domain/). Enter only the directory name to install in a directory (for http://domain/name/ enter name only). This directory SHOULD NOT exist, it will be automatically created! (From the Page)
   • Administrator-username: Create a unique username to use for logging it to the new WordPress installation.
   • Password: As always, use a unique combination of letters and numbers when creating your password and don’t forget to remember it!
   • Admin nickname: This is the name that you want to be displayed as the author when making posts in WordPress.
   • Admin e-mail: Self-explanatory.
   • Site name: This will be displayed in the header of each page.
   • Description: This will also be displayed in the header of each page as a tag line.
   • E-mail account configuration: Self-explanatory.
6. Click on the “Finish installation” button.
